Overcoming pornography

“I would masturbate in the classroom in front of my school teachers”

I’ve struggled with porn and masturbation for a very long time – both before and after becoming a Christian. I was somewhat of an addict. I looked at magazines, newspapers, T.V and the internet etc for ways that I could arouse myself. However, overtime I found that these things didn’t satisfy me as much as they used to, and so I sought out ‘greater’ thrills to pleasure myself to the point where I visited a prostitute. I learnt first hand that the pleasures of sin are fleeting – they do not satisfy.

As a Christian, I became burdened with guilt and shame. I wanted to honour God but I kept on slipping up in this area. I felt like a hypocrite. I then discovered some accountability software online at http://www.x3watch.com which sends a report of any questionable type websites to my accountability partner who at the time was my Pastor. Knowing that he would be seeing the websites I visit made me not want to go on them even more. God used this tool as a way of setting me free from my addiction. I was free from porn and masturbation for almost 5 years, which has been the longest period of time ever for me!

I use the word ‘was’ as since that period I have actually slipped up sexually on several occasions. However, I still wanted to share my testimony as I believe that there is power in it despite how old it may be.

Accountability is good but knowing that you have been bought with a price, the blood of Jesus, and that our body doesn’t belong to us but God, this should cause us to want to please Him instead. It’s a fundamental truth that we often forget in our day to day walk. As soon as a lustful thought enters our mind, we must rebuke it and remind ourselves of this simple truth: Jesus shed his blood for us.

I am currently on a new walk of purity and am looking forward to another 5 years and more of honouring God with my body!

“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own” (Philippians 3:12).
